Kind words from Peter Revell, Professor Emeritus, University College, London on his colleague and friend Dr. Charles Baquey:

“The passing of Charles Baquey is a cause of great sadness. He was a leading figure in the development of biomaterials science and a much valued member of the Council of the ESB over many years as treasurer then vice president. He undertook the role of unravelling the financial situation in which the society had accounts in numerous different currencies by establishing that membership fees be paid in the newly introduced Euro and that we worked solely in that currency. It is all too easy to forget how complex these matters had become only just over twenty years ago. Memorable too from those times is the ESB Conference hosted by Charles in 1999 at Arcachon near Bordeaux with the first Young Scientists’ Forum and an unforgettable dinner in St Emilion. It was my privilege to see the detail of the work Professor Baquey directed in Bordeaux, visiting the unit on behalf of both for INSERM and the EU. Charles was always most open and friendly at a personal level and I enjoyed his companionship over good food and, more importantly, good wine on many occasions. We became Fellows of IUS-BSE at the same time during the World Congress in Hawaii. A true pioneer in biomaterials and trusted colleague over the years, he was a true servant of the European Society for Biomaterials and he will be sorely missed.” (Peter Revell; FBSE)
