Dr. Vasif Hasirci is a professor at the Department of Biological Sciences of the Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara (Turkey). He is a chemist and an expert in biomedical, biotechnological and nanotechnological applications of natural and synthetic polymers. He is the Director of the Center of Excellence in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering at the Middle East Technical University (METU) and the President of the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Society (Turkey). He serves on the Editorial Boards of the journals Biomaterials; Nanomedicine; and J. Biomaterials Science: Polymer Edition, among others. He has 5 patents and patent applications, 197 SCI journal papers, supervised 40+ M.Sc. and 20+ Ph.D. students, was cited 3538 times and has a H-index of 37 (web of science)

Areas of research interest:

I am interested in biodegradable natural and synthetic polymers such as collagen, gelatine,  hyaluronic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates and polylactic acid homo and copolymers.  Tissue engineering, cell-material interactions, modifications of polymeric surfaces at micro and nano level,  additive manufacturing are the topics I am more interested in the recent years. As tissue engineering targets corneal stroma, bone, meniscus, nerve guides, and skin models are the most important applications
