Biography:

Dr John A.M. Ramshaw is a Chemist with Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees awarded from University of Durham, UK.  He recently retired as a Chief Research Scientist (8M) at CSIRO Manufacturing and is now an Honorary Fellow in this business unit.

He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering (2003).

His research activities have been on collagen and biomaterial product developments, based on collagen structure and function, molecular biology and tissue engineering approaches.  He has held major research grants from Industry and from Government for his activities in these areas.

He has been involved with a range of successful international collaborations.  He has published over 200 scientific papers and is an inventor on many Patents and applications pending.  He has won two CSIRO Research Medals as a key team member.

He has acted as a consultant to a range of Australian and overseas companies and served on the Therapeutic Device Evaluation Committee Advisory Panel on Biomaterials.  He is a member of several professional societies, including the Australian Society for Biomaterials of which he was the inaugural President.  He served as the Australian delegate to the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering for 14 years, and was Hon. Secretary of this body from 2000 -2008.

Areas of research interest:

Ramshaw’s research activities have been in protein chemistry, particularly on collagens.  This has been focused on biomaterial product developments, based on collagen structure and function, molecular biology and tissue engineering approaches.
